What is Art Vistas?
Six Times a year, Art Vistas docents bring “mini exhibits” of great works of art to the classroom and conduct easy to understand discussions with the children. This is followed by hands-on lessons that provide unique creative opportunities. Docents involved in the Art Vistas program will enjoy working with children, and seeing them grow in understanding and enjoyment of art appreciation and art history. With the knowledge and language gained from Art Vistas presentations, students can approach any work of art with a sense of confidence. They will be able to discuss the artist’s use of color, line, shape, texture and value. In addition, the students own artwork will improve with the knowledge and hands-on experience gained from the program.
The Art Vistas docent are also instrumental in the Oster art show each year. Docents collect, sort, mount, and label pieces of student art.

How can I participate?
Each classroom requires 3-4 parent volunteers to make this program a success: 1 lead docent and 2-3 helpers
DocentsBeing an Art Vistas docent is a wonderful experience, and a fun way to spend time in your student's class. Docents are provided with portfolios of fine art prints to bring into the classrooms and conduct easy-to-understand discussions with the children. This is followed by hands-on projects that provide unique creative opportunities for each student. All supplies for the projects are prepared in advance by the school's Head Docent and Art Vistas team. Each Lead Docent is responsible for the Art Vistas program in their individual classroom, and will work closely with the teacher to schedule lessons.

Helpers
The helpers assist the docent with the hands-on portion of Art Vistas. Helpers will set up the supplies during the art discussion per docent instructions. Helpers will work closely with the students during the art project portion; making sure the students have the supplies they need, keeping them on track, and helping with clean up.

What if I don't know anything about art?
Don't worry, there is training available.

Every lead docent is required to participate in grade-level training. All grade-level training is from 7-9 PM at the Union School District office in the M&O building. Please check the District calendar for dates.
